After 40 years on the tools, the brands I reach for most are Rheem and Rinnai. Not because they never fail, but because they are well built and, just as importantly, I can get parts fast anywhere in Sydney. Dux and Bosch are solid too. The parts network is what saves you money years later.
When someone asks me which hot water brand to buy, they usually expect me to name a favourite and be done with it. Forty years fitting and fixing these units around Berala and Western Sydney has taught me it is not that simple. A brand is only as good as the day it breaks down, so I rate them on two things: how well they are built, and how fast I can get a part when they eventually fail. Every unit fails sooner or later. The good ones fail rarely and get fixed the same day.
Why I judge a brand on its parts network
A hot water system that lasts fifteen years will still need a valve, an element or a thermocouple somewhere along the way. If that part sits on a shelf at every supplier in Sydney, I can have your hot water back on the same morning. If it has to be ordered in from interstate, you are cold for a week and paying for freight on top. That is the real reason I lean towards Rheem and Rinnai. They have the widest parts network in Sydney by a mile, and that matters far more than a glossy brochure.
The continuous flow brands I trust
For gas continuous flow, Rinnai's Infinity range is the benchmark, and has been for as long as I can remember. The units are reliable, easy to service, and parts are everywhere. Rheem's continuous flow units, the 26 and 32 models, are right up there too and share that same strong service network. Bosch has earned its reputation over the years and I am happy to fit one. All three do the job well, and the gap between them is small, so I often come back to whichever has parts closest to your suburb.
The storage and heat pump brands I stand behind
For electric and gas storage tanks, Rheem has the longest local manufacturing history in the country and its Stellar electric range is a genuine workhorse. Dux has been Australian since 1915 and makes a solid, honest tank that I have no problem recommending. Aquamax and Vulcan turn up in plenty of older homes and hold up fine.
Heat pumps are newer ground for a lot of people, so I am careful here. Reclaim Energy and Sanden are the two I rate most for cold Sydney mornings, because they are built to keep working when the air is chilly. Rheem and the Dux Airoheat make capable heat pumps as well, and iStore and Stiebel Eltron have their place. I match the unit to your roof, your gas connection and how many people are in the house, not to whatever is on special that week.
The honest caveats
No brand is perfect, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. I have pulled out premium units that failed early and cheap ones that ran for twenty years. A lot comes down to whether the unit was sized and installed properly in the first place. A great brand fitted badly will still give you grief.
