7 signs your hot water system needs replacing

• Rumbling, banging or popping sounds. Sediment builds up on the bottom of the tank and traps water beneath it, which boils and pops as the unit heats.
• Inconsistent temperature. Water that swings from hot to lukewarm without anyone touching a tap points to a thermostat or element on the way out.
• A pilot light that keeps going out. On older gas storage units this often signals a failing thermocouple or a burner problem.
• Rising energy bills with no change in household habits. An ageing system works harder to deliver the same water.

Repair or replace?
