What I've learned installing every major hot water brand
The biggest lesson from 40 years is that the right hot water system depends on your home, not the brochure. Gas continuous flow suits most gas-connected homes, heat pumps are cheapest to run, and the most common mistake I see is buying a unit that is too small for the household.
I have fitted gas, electric, heat pump and solar hot water in every kind of home Western Sydney has, from tiny Auburn units to big Strathfield family houses. After four decades the patterns are clear. Most of the trouble people run into is not the brand, it is the wrong type or the wrong size for the way they actually live. Here is what all those installs have taught me.
Every system type has a job it does best
Gas continuous flow heats water on demand and never runs out, which suits most gas-connected homes and larger families. Electric storage is the cheapest to buy and fit, and it is genuinely economical on off-peak or controlled load, but dear on a normal tariff. Gas storage is a simple like-for-like swap when that is what a home already runs. Heat pumps use around a third of the power of an electric element because they move heat rather than make it, so they are the cheapest to run and the only type that attracts a rebate. Solar gives the lowest bills long term but costs the most up front and needs north-facing roof space. There is no single best system. There is a best system for your home.
The sizing mistake I see most
The number one mistake homeowners make is going too small to save a few hundred dollars up front. A single bathroom is fine on a 16 to 20 litre per minute continuous flow unit, but two bathrooms need 24 to 26, and three or more need 32. On storage tanks it is the same story: a couple can live on 125 to 170 litres, a family of four needs 250 to 315, and a big household needs 315 to 400. Undersize it and you run out of hot water mid-shower every winter. It is the complaint I hear most often, and it nearly always traces back to a sizing decision made years earlier.
The brand quirks worth knowing
Every brand has its habits. Rinnai and Rheem continuous flow units are reliable and, more to the point, parts are on every shelf in Sydney, so a fault is a quick fix. Older electric tanks live and die on their anode rod, which most people never think to check. Heat pumps are quieter and cheaper to run than folks expect, but a cheap one struggles on a cold morning, which is why I stick to brands built for our winters. None of this is printed in the brochure. You only learn it from pulling hundreds of them apart.
Repair or replace: how I decide
When a unit plays up, I do not automatically push a new one. If a tank is under about eight years old and the fault is an element, a thermostat or a valve, a repair in the 150 to 450 dollar range is usually the smart money. If it is past ten to twelve years, leaking from the tank itself, or the parts bill is climbing towards half the cost of a new unit, replacement makes more sense. I will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on and quote a fixed price either way.
