What to do if a pipe bursts

A burst pipe can flood a room in minutes, so the first few actions matter more than anything else. The goal is simple. Stop the water, keep everyone safe from electricity, then get a licensed plumber on the way.

Stop the water first

The single most important thing is to shut off the water at the mains meter. In most Western Sydney homes the meter sits near the front boundary or fence line. Turn the tap or lever clockwise until it stops. This cuts water to the whole house and takes the pressure off the burst, which slows the flooding right down.

If the burst is on the hot water line, also switch off the hot water system so it does not keep heating an empty tank.

Stay safe around power

Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If water is anywhere near power points, light fittings or the switchboard, switch off the power at the main switch before you start mopping. Never stand in water to reach a switch. If you are not sure it is safe, stay clear and wait for help.

Drain the pipes down

Once the mains is off, open the lowest taps in the house and outside. This releases the water still sitting in the pipes and stops it draining back through the burst. Flush the toilets too. Within a minute or two the flow should slow to a trickle.

Clear up and protect your things

Mop or towel up standing water and move furniture, rugs and electricals off wet floors. Older weatherboard and brick homes across Berala, Auburn and Lidcombe can hold moisture in walls and floorboards, so drying out quickly helps prevent mould later. Take a few photos of the damage for your insurer.

What causes pipes to burst

Knowing the cause helps you avoid a repeat. Common triggers in local homes include old galvanised steel pipes rusting from the inside, tree roots pushing on underground lines, ground movement, and water hammer from worn valves. If your home is more than a few decades old and you have had more than one burst, it is often a sign the pipework is nearing the end of its life and worth a proper look.

Keep the mains meter location in mind before anything goes wrong. Knowing where your shutoff is, and that it actually turns, is the best five minutes of prevention you can do.
